Our Next Luminaries
Our next luminary is only an education away.
It’s no accident that some of the most successful people in the world are avid readers. People who read books tend to have a greater imagination, a larger vocabulary and higher levels of empathy and emotional intelligence. All that translates to intelligence. Yes, people who read really are ‘smarter’.
At PWco. we firmly believe that books can change lives. Kids who have access to books are more likely do better in school than those kids who don’t. For children who don’t have books in their homes, classroom libraries—the collection of books teachers have inside the classroom, easily accessible by students— become an essential part of providing that access.
However, classroom libraries are only available for 43% of school-aged children and only one third say they have a classroom library that has enough of the types of books they'd like to read (Scholastic.com). For schools without a classroom library, a school library can give students a path to books. However, according to the Department of Education:
- 5 million children across the country are enrolled in districts where there are no libraries.
- 13 million children are enrolled in districts where the children's materials circulation is less than 10 per student, including 3.4 million students in poverty and 6.6 million students of color.
Students need books to put them on the road to success. Bright students in underserved communities need benefactors that help them realize their college dreams.
A part of our revenue goes to supporting libraries in underserved communities and programs that help bright students in lower-income areas find a path to college. Through our partnership with Lisa Libraries, we help put books in the hands of kids. And through our support for GRASP (Great Aspirations Scholarship Program), we help students make their higher education goals a reality.
Knowledge is power.
